Our award-winning Omega3 pork is the result of 5 years’ extensive research in partnership with selected farmers and Finnish research institutes, including the Natural Resources Institute Finland and University of Helsinki.

We found that carefully enriching pigs’ diets with Brassica napus* seed improves the texture and flavour of the pork, as well as enhancing the level of Omega3 – so we raise our pigs on small, family owned farms and feed them a completely natural diet of GMO-free corn mixed with locally grown rapeseed.

**Brassica napus (Latin name) is commonly known as rapeseed, oilseed rape, or 油菜: (Mandarin Pinyin yóucài; Cantonese: yau choy), and is the crop produced from the fields of bright yellow flowers commonly seen in Nordic countries. Cultivated mainly for its oil-rich seeds, it is one of nature’s best sources of Omega 3.

OMEGA-3 BENEFITS

The addition of rapeseed to our pigs’ feed boosts the amount of essential Omega3 fatty acids in our pork – up to 4 times more compared to conventionally raised meat. In turn, saturated fat is reduced to a level close to white meats like chicken and turkey.

A diet rich in Omega3 and low in saturated fat has been shown to have many health advantages, including a reduced risk of heart disease.

The National Institute for Health and Welfare presented the National Health Award to our parent company, HKScan Finland for its work towards better heart health. One of the criteria was decreasing the amount of saturated fat in the Finnish diet, thanks to Omega3 pork products.  (See chart below)
